The objective is to make it seem to visitors that your resource center is part of your website, even though it's being hosted on Hushly’s servers. With a subdomain, you can do this by creating a CNAME record in your DNS (domain name server).
A CNAME record is essentially an alias. It tells a browser "if a user asks for URL A, tell them that they're looking at URL A, but actually go to URL B instead." In this case, URL A is your custom subdomain, and URL B refers to Hushly’s server.
Here's an overview of the whole process:
- Your resource center is hosted on our server at hubs.hushly.com. This is the domain where we host all resource centers.
- To get to your resource center, you want your users to visit a URL that's part of your website. This will be a subdomain of your website, in the form of [something].mycompany.com.
- First, you create and choose the subdomain you want to use. Let's say you choose resources.mycompany.com.
- Next, you create a CNAME record that points to resources.mycompany.com at hubs.hushly.com. This makes anyone who goes to resources.mycompany.com to hubs.hushly.com instead-but makes it look like they're still on resources.mycompany.com.
Enable SSL to your resource center.
SSL has now been deprecated in favor of the newer TLS protocol, but "SSL" is still the more commonly used term when referring to encrypted web connections. To be clear, whenever we use "SSL", we technically mean "TLS".
Depending on your choice, your next steps will differ:
- If you choose Hushly managed SSL certificate (most of our customers elect to go with this option), you will need to add another CNAME entry to your DNS server within 48 hours of receiving the CNAME name and value pair from Hushly.
- If you choose Self managed SSL certificate, you will need to prepare and send Hushly the certificate file for your subdomain [something].mycompany.com
In Summary
Most customers choose resources.mycompany.com as their subdomain and choose Hushly managed SSL certificate for their resource center (hosted on Hushly’s servers). When your IT personnel is ready to create the two CNAME records on your DNS server please let Hushly know and we will send the CNAME details to you. Please ensure that both of the CNAME records is created within 48 hours of receipt of the CNAME information.
